"OVERTURE" - 1st International Festival for Classical Saxophone Leipzig 2024
Henk van Twillert (Portugal), Saxophone Frank Liebscher (Leipzig), Saxophone "Vento do Norte" (Portugal), Saxophone Ensemble The Hochschule für Musik & Theater Leipzig (HMT) proudly presents the 1st International Festival for Classical Saxophone, "OVERTURE," from February 20 to 23, 2024. The aim of the festival is to bring the genre of Classical Saxophone into greater public focus and showcase the diversity of the instrument. The festival kicks off with an opening concert in the Great Hall of the HMT and offers additional events at representative Leipzig venues, including the Musiksalon and the Blackbox of the HMT on Dittrichring, the Alte Handelsbörse, the Alte Rathaussaal, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, and the Thomaskirche. The key participating artists are Prof. Henk van Twillert and the saxophone ensemble "Vento do Norte" from ESMAE Porto (Portugal), along with Dr. Frank Liebscher from HMT Leipzig. The repertoire of the festival includes works from the classical original literature as well as arrangements for saxophone, saxophone ensemble, and saxophone with piano. Master double bassist Dominic Seldis brings a wonderful evening full of music and humour.
Discover the virtuosity of double bass player Dominic Seldis, a true master of his craft. With his stunning technical skills and natural musicality, he makes the double bass sound like never before. In addition to his fame as a jury member in Maestro and as a presenter of various TV programmes, Dominic Seldis shines as principal of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and as a soloist on stages worldwide. Together with saxophonist Henk van Twillert, Dominic created the program DOUBLE Bass! successfully performed several times for enthusiastic full houses. But this time they add a pianist, Tjako van Schie, to the mix. The program, presented by Dominic and Henk, promises a rich collection of compositions and arrangements for double bass/baritone sax, some with piano and others without. The connection between the Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet and the city of Aveiro began in 1991, with an invitation from saxophonist and educator Fernando Valente to the Quartet. From then until 2009, they included Aveiro in their numerous international tours, marked by the love and enthusiasm they felt for their community. Now, after more than a decade, the new Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet returns to the stage in a unique and exclusive concert in Aveiro. This year, 2022, the birthday of the Amersfoort-born artist Piet Mondriaan (1872 - 1944) will be commemorated. The composer Johan de Meij has composed a sensational homage to Mondriaan for baritone saxophone and wind band. With an overwhelming light and set design by Rob Hauser and world's best wind band the Marine Band of the Royal Navy, under the inspiring leadership of Major Arjan Tien, I have the honor of being the soloist on my beloved baritone saxophone. An evening full of premières; Mondriaan, as a soloist with the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, and this all in Amersfoort. (NL) Dit jaar, 2022, wordt de geboortedag van de in Amersfoort geboren kunstenaar Piet Mondriaan (1872 - 1944) herdacht. De componist Johan de Meij heeft de sensationele homage aan Mondriaan gecomponeerd voor baritonsaxofoon en harmonieorkest. Who does not know it; The beautiful “Hallelujah” from Handel's Messiah, or from the legendary singer Leonard Cohen, and certainly also the song winning the Eurovision Song Contest 1979 by Israel Milk and Honey. Henk van Twillert and Vento do Norte have it all on their program to stand. On April 2, Henk van Twillert and his Portuguese saxophone ensemble "Vento do Norte" arrive in the Netherlands for a truly spectacular tour. In addition to the CD presentation of their CD “Toot Your Roots”, delayed by two years, the latest version of “Hallelujah” is performed by the youngest generation “Vento do Norte”
Further on the program; drama and romance in Bernstein's West-side Story, thrilling tangos by Piazzolla and new inspiring sounds by Dutch composers such as Van Schie, Meijering and Van Dijk. This event is organized by Mordomia São Goncalinho (The Butlers of Saint Little Goncalo) will be live streamed online WorldWide, from Capela de Sao Gonçalinho, Aveiro, Portugal to you. A twenty-four-hour benefit concert starting at 12 o’clock on the 18th of December, for enforce the local enterprises and traditional commerce. Starting at 18 December, 12 noon, on the hour, I will be playing a program about 24 minutes until the 12 o’clock of the 19th December. In sum, 24 hours, a colossal 24 programs of 24 minutes. During the intervals of the performance’s videos will be shown in where we can meet the local habitants, the authentic and traditional small enterprises, from our neighborhood at Beira Mar, Aveiro. This event “24H São Gonçalinho – 24H Henk van Twillert in Concert” is a joy, an effort, a dream and my contribution to the Mordomia São Goncalinho and the local community. This festival offers a street animation and social interaction among the people of the neighborhood, the city and visitors. It is an unique event in the city of Aveiro, highlighting the collective participation of hundreds of people, with their arts. This challenge consisted in creating a circuit / itinerary of intimist mini-concerts to be held in several houses of the Beira-Mar´s Quarter, where the population will open their doors to receive not only the invited musicians, who will carry out small performances of various genres and musical styles, but also the guests who will be present at the musical pieces, organized in small groups and accompanied by an element of the Mordomia de São Gonçalinho. These mini-concerts are the highlight of the first of the three days festival, and will take place from 9:00 p.m. until 0:00 a.m. on Friday, September 21st. For this day, 18 stages and 18 artists are confirmed, who will gather at Largo da Capela de São Gonçalinho later in the evening, around 0:00 a.m. to celebrate the moment and sing the great Marcha de São Gonçalinho with the population and spectators.

The São Gonçalinho Street Arts Fest is an urban festival of performative street arts conceived by Mordomia de São Gonçalinho and will take place the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of September 2018 in the Beira-Mar Quarter, in Aveiro.
This festival intends to become a mega event offering street animation and social interaction among the people of the neighbourhood, the city and visitors / tourists, creating a unique event, never before seen in the city of Aveiro, highlighting the collective participation of more than a hundred people and entities that made it possible, creating a joint work totally offered to the city, and by which the organization is very grateful. |

From 12 to 18 March saxophonist Henk van Twillert and Vento do Norte saxophone ensemble will be touring in Holland.
Beside private and school concerts they will be playing concerts open to everyone in Barneveld where saxophone orchestra SAXUS will join them, on the 17th March. On 16th they will go south on the province of Limburg to perform in the Theaterboerderij Boeket in Nederweert and on the 18th of March they will be playing in Amsterdam, on the Amstelkerk. In the program among other’s J.S. Bach in a unique way :) Make sure that you can be present in one of the concerts and bring some friends because it will be for sure a wonderful time! |
