The Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet - ASQ
"You wouldn't believe what four saxophones can do!”
The unlimited expression of the saxophone has always been the starting point for the repertoire of the Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet. Sometimes it is smooth and shiny, other times dark and "foggy", or even sensual and exciting. All these aspects find their place in the diverse history of the group, such as their take on the works of Glazounov and Rivier, representing the classical style, or works by Meijering and Ketting representing the contemporary Dutch repertoire specifically written for the ASQ.. Much of the repertoire consists of arrangements: Puerto Rican Medley, West Side Story, An American in Paris, Portugal Suite and Homage to Frank Zappa & Jimi Hendrix. Besides their quartet albums, the ASQ has also recorded with famous soloists from jazz, folk and classical music, such as Jaap Van Zweden, Daniel Wayenberg and Han Bennink. In 1996 they recorded the memorable CD ‘Encontro’ together with Fernando Valente. Their widespread recognition earned them concerts and tours in countries such as Germany, Belarus, Belgium, Cuba, France, Holland, Italy, Indonesia, China and Portugal. The Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet was created in 1979 by Henk van Twillert and Bart Kok, both students at the Amsterdam Conservatory. In 2019, Rob Hauser and Henk van Twillert welcomed Menne Smallenbroek and Hristo Goleminov as new members of the Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet.
